5 Business Regrets

November 14, 2014

Listening to the radio yesterday afternoon on a long (long) drive into the CBD they were talking about what a nurse had said were the 10 most common regrets patients had talked about before they passed.  Morbid huh!  But it got me thinking about 5 things (I couldn’t come up with 10!) I would change about how I’ve run my business – in hindsight.

5 regrets in business

And here they are:

  1. Not focusing on a better work-life balance, sooner.
  2. Thinking no-one can do as good a job as I can (it’s just not true). If I had learned how to delegate more, sooner I would have saved myself so many early morning finishes!
  3. Trying to learn everything.  Again, sourcing specialist skills on my team have meant I don’t need to spread myself too thin skills-wise.  For example I can do graphic design but bringing a designer into my team has meant I can provide an even better service.
  4. Spending way too much energy on clients who are not my ideal client.
  5. Not valuing my own time enough.

But this is about you – not me!

Take a moment and identify 5 business regrets.  Some may have been rectified, some may be an ongoing regret.

  1. ______________________________________
  2. ______________________________________
  3. ______________________________________
  4. ______________________________________
  5. ______________________________________

Now, note what you need to do (or have done) to turn the regret around.  This may be an action or a change in attitude/thought process.

  1. ______________________________________
  2. ______________________________________
  3. ______________________________________
  4. ______________________________________
  5. ______________________________________

Business, like life, needn’t have regrets.  Not if you take time to turn those regrets into lessons and act on them.

Now, since I have very bravely (or stupidly!!) put my regrets out there it’s only fair you do the same!!  Comment below, what’s your biggest business regret?

If you made it all the way to the bottom, thank you for reading!  Please comment if you have something to share and if you’d like to receive my weekly blog straight to your inbox, please subscribe here.  I’d absolutely love that!
